The Perfect Working Posture? It Doesn’t Exist!

Does your employer also send you pictures like this with the ”perfect working posture” to instruct you on how to sit in an ergonomically sound way? Nothing wrong with that, right?

Actually, I think there is…

1) Don’t have a typical body (who does?), or do you have (or have you had) physical complaints? No ergonomic office chair at home? Then these tips often don’t apply, and can sometimes even be dangerous.

2) It’s almost impossible to learn a physical posture from a picture.

3) Shifting the obligation to give employees advice (under the Dutch Working Conditions Act) onto a video or picture they have to watch is, in my view, a bad example of “tick the box” mentality.

I strongly believe in an individual approach. Every physical body is different, and most people no longer work full-time in a perfectly designed office. During an online workstation assessment, I look at how people work, give targeted tips, and teach them how the body works and how to recognise problems. In my advice, I also discuss mental and other aspects of working (from home).
